Services Offered
Students have access to a variety of mental health services through our office. Your counselor will ask you some questions during your first meeting to better understand your needs and what might be helpful to you.
Crisis Intervention
Immediate assistance to address a mental health crisis. Accessed by walking into Health Services on the 3rd floor of Peter Buck Center for Health and Fitness (M-F, 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m. during the academic year). Crisis services can also be accessed on the Emergency Assistance page.
Single-Session Counseling
This is a great option if you have a specific concern and need a bit of help to get unstuck and move forward.
Episodic Counseling
With this option, you schedule appointments as you need them, and you are not limited to seeing a single counselor. Episodic Counseling gives you the most scheduling flexibility and does not require a weekly commitment.
Short-Term Counseling
Weekly counseling over a set timeframe, with the same counselor, to address persistent concerns.
Group Counseling
Working with others in a confidential group. Helping others and being helped by them. Some groups focus on a specific issue such as depression or grief. This kind of group is clinician-led.
Support Groups
Opportunity to gather with others having the same concern or experiencing the same challenge to give and receive mutual support in a less formal setting. This kind of group may be peer-led or clinician-led.
Medication Evaluation/Management
We connect you with a provider in Health Services for psychiatric medication services.
Internal Referrals
There are many on-campus services available to Bowdoin students. We help you find and connect with them.
External Referrals
Sometimes students require access to specialist services or resources we can’t provide. We assist you in finding and connecting with these resources.
Programming/Workshops
Some students prefer a DIY approach to mental health and well-being. We work with partners on campus to raise awareness of, provide education on, and build skills around mental health and well being topics.
Consultation
Counselors meet with faculty, staff, or students to provide information and suggestions about mental health and well-being topics.
